The Organizing from the Bottom Up online course teaches bottom-up thinkers to organize their thoughts in the way their brains think: from part to whole. The course’s innovative methodology encourages students to embrace their many thoughts and, much like a sculptor, find their form in them. Specifically, students are taught to look at the details, see connections, create an organizing principle, check their work, and ensure that the organization of their idea reflects their intended goals. Then, after acquiring the foundational knowledge of this approach and having practiced for skill development, students can start applying organization to their most pressing challenges: from writing their dissertation to sorting their sock drawers. With their ideas now ready to be shared, bottom-up thinkers can finally express their authentic selves via a dedicated approach to organizing their thoughts. 


Group Learning Schedule

With goals of accountability, enhanced learning, and community development, this group learning component provides an opportunity for meaningful engagement with fellow members and your course author, Kim Stewart, MS CCC-SLP. Engage with this community by posting ideas and reflections in a community space and participating in weekly, 60-minute, live Q&A sessions that include relaxed small group conversations.

Organizing from the Bottom Up: Group Learning Course

Instructor

Kimberly Stewart

Kimberly Stewart, MS CCC-SLP is a cognitive-linguistic therapist and speech-language pathologist with expertise in the diagnosis and treatment developmental language disorders. She specializes in the impact of executive function difficulty on communication (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and on day-to-day function (materials management, time management, and project planning). Kim works with adolescents and adults whose struggles with organization are often missed due to their strong cognitive abilities. She has expertise in helping people develop skills to find structure independently and create organizational systems that are personally meaningful and sustainable. Before opening a private practice in 2007, Kim worked as Senior Speech-Language Pathologist and Clinical Specialist at the Massachusetts General Hospital. She received hospital-wide recognition for her clinical work, being honored with the Stephanie M. Macaluso, RN Excellence in Clinical Practice Award. Prior to her work in the field, Kim received a Bachelor's degree from Mount Holyoke College (German), a Master's degree from the MGH Institute of Health Professions (Communication Disorders), and scholarships from the Fulbright Association and the German Academic Exchange Service. She also worked in the Literacy Division of World Education, a nonprofit organization focused on basic education and healthcare for adults, supporting the organization's Literacy Division. Kim has presented at the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association, provided in-services to teachers, speech-language pathologist and psychology graduate students, clinicians, interns, and staff, and has provided specialized trainings to numerous groups ranging from elementary school staff and dissertation-writing graduate students to faculty looking to improve the organization of their course content. She is a professional member of the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association. In her free time, Kim likes to travel, sail, hike, bake, garden, make art, and go on adventures with her awesome daughter and dog.
